Is algae growth caused by Climate change?
Forde George Chartered Building Surveyors has seen a possible increase in certain algae growths on render throughout the South West of England.
Noticed during surveys and Expertness Witness instructions, these reddish brown, almost rust like stains occur on standard cementitious and specialist renders. The appearance of such staining has now been reported in South Wales and South West Ireland. It is unclear at this stage whether such growth would occur on more traditional lime based renders, often used during our conservation projects with Historic Buildings.
Fortunately however the cause has been attributed to Algae growth, found primarily in areas of low pollution. Could the increase also be due to changes in the air temperature?
There are fortunately products on the market which aim to remove the algae staining and limit its future growth. Such products can for example be found on the K Rend website.
